Καλησπέρα,

Είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ανακοινώσουμε την δημιουργία της
ελληνικής κοινότητας KDE. Στην ουσία είναι μία επέκταση της ομάδας
μεταφραστών σε πλήρη κοινότητα.

Μπορείτε να έρθετε σε επικοινωνία μαζί μας με τους εξής τρόπους:

1. Το κύριο μέσο επικοινωνίας μας θα είναι η mailing list
[hidden email]. Για να εγγραφείτε το μόνο που έχετε να κάνετε είναι να
στείλετε email στο [hidden email] γράφοντας subscribe
your-email-address ως θέμα του μηνύματος.

Μέσω της mailing list θα διοργανώνονται τα διάφορα events της
κοινότητας και οι διάφορες μελλοντικές δραστηριότητες.

Σε περίπτωση τώρα που θέλετε να βοηθήσετε στον εξελληνισμό του KDE
μπορείτε να εγγραφείτε στην [hidden email] mailing list. O τροπος

Τα παρτυ θα πραγματοποιηθούνε,

1.στην Λαρισα στις 27-1-2012 και ωρα 18:00 στο εργαστήριο της LinuxTeam ATEI Λαρισας.

2.στην Θεσσαλονίκη στις 28-1-2012 και ωρα 20:00 στο TheHackerspace που βρίσκετε

στο 'Κόκκινη κλωστή δεμένη' Λευκωσίας 32 Καλαμαριά κ

3.στην Αθηνα στα μέσα Φεβρουαριου(σε λιγες μερες θα εχουμε περισσοτερες πληροφοριες)

Επισης εάν θέλετε να οργανώσετε καποιο παρτυ στην πολη σας,δηλωστε στο wiki και έπειτα

μπορειτε να έρθετε σε επικοινωνια μαζι μας μεσω τις λιστας για να σας δωσουμε υλικο.

An important announcement about sun java packages that remained in the canonical partner repository (archive.canonical.com). To be honest, I've been expecting such an announcement. There are several security exploits with the version of Sun Java (sun-java6).

If you are using any of the sun java packages, you are advised to start using openjdk (ubuntu packages openjdk-6-jre or default-jre default-jdk) and purge any sun-java packages.

In short, for ubuntu 10.04 (and later versions):
sudo apt-get purge sun-java6.*
sudo apt-get install default-jre default-jdk openjdk-6-jre
sudo update-alternatives --config java
sudo update-alternatives --config javaws

(For the last two commands, if you are given more choices, choose openjdk instead of sun java)

If you really need sun/oracle java, then install oracle java 7:

The Canonical partner archive currently contains Oracle's Sun Java JDK
packages (sun-java6) for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 11.04.

As of August 24th 2011, we no longer have permission to redistribute new
Java packages as Oracle has retired the “Operating System Distributor
License for Java” [1][2].

Oracle has published an advisory about security issues in the version of
Java we currently have in the partner archive [3]. Some of these issues are
currently being exploited in the wild.

Due to the severity of the security risk, Canonical is immediately
releasing a security update for the Sun JDK browser plugin which will
disable the plugin on all machines. This will mitigate users' risk from
malicious websites exploiting the vulnerable version of the Sun JDK.

In the near future (exact date TBD), Canonical will remove all Sun JDK
packages from the Partner archive. This will be accomplished by pushing
empty packages to the archive, so that the Sun JDK will be removed from all
users machines when they do a software update. Users of these packages who
have not migrated to an alternative solution will experience failures after
the package updates have removed Oracle Java from the system.

If you are currently using the Oracle Java packages from the partner
archive, you have two options:

1- Install the OpenJDK packages that are provided in the main Ubuntu
archive. (icedtea6-plugin for the browser plugin, openjdk-6-jdk or
openjdk-6-jre for the virtual machine)
2- Manually install Oracle's Java software from their web site [4].

Ubuntu 11.10 - "Oneiric Oselot" is out

Yet another Ubuntu release with new improvements on the following:

Unity interface has been improved. Maybe it deserves a second break? :)

New Gnome 3 as an option. I can't wait to try it out!

Bye-bye Gnome2. I Actually liked this one but it was ment to be
replaced eventually.

Bye-bye Evolution. Evolution started very promising but turn out to
be one of the crappiest email clients around

Welcome Thunderbird! This was always my email client of choice

I will try it tomorrow. Give it a try yourselves!

Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" Available

The new ubuntu release is here, packing the bright new shiny "Unity" desktop.
Even though it's a personal opinion, I have to say I liked it. Give it a try or give it a couple of months before upgrading, check out the release notes and known issues: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyNarwhal/ReleaseNotes

Finally a warning, the btrfs filesystem included in this release is still experimental, don't use it on disks/partitions containing critical data. There is no fsck tool that can fix errors on a corrupted btrfs filesystem.

Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) reaches end-of-life on June 1 2011

Ubuntu announced its 6.06 Server release almost 5 years ago, on June 1,
2006. For the LTS Server releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing
security and critical fixes for a period of 5 years. The support
period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server will reach
end of life on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. At that time, Ubuntu Security
Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for
Ubuntu 6.06.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server is via
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server. Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may

Ubuntu announced its 9.10 release almost 18 months ago, on October 29,
2009. As with the earlier releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing security
and critical fixes for a period of 18 months. The support period is now
nearing its end and Ubuntu 9.10 will reach end of life on Friday,
April 29, 2011. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer
include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 9.10.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 9.10 is via Ubuntu 10.04.

ShipIt discontinued, but CDs still available for Approved LoCos

Unfortunately, shipit has been halted for personal CD requests. Jono Bacon, the community manager, has listed several reasons behind this decision. I kind of disagree with this, but anyway -- CDs can still be requested for events and LoCo teams. We could probably make a deal with the Greek LoCo team and receive some CDs on time. :)

Μέχρι πρόσφατα μπορούσε ο καθένας να ζητήσει μερικά δωρεάν CD με Ubuntu
από την Canonical, τα οποία στέλνονται ταχυδρομικά. Και μερικοί έχουν κάνει
και συλλογή από τα CD από το 2004 (?) όταν ξεκίνησε το έργο.

Ωστόσο η δυνατότητα για αποστολή μεμονωμένων CD δωρεάν δεν υπάρχει πια,
όπως ανακοινώθηκε πριν από λίγο,

Ο λόγος είναι ότι δεν είναι τόσο σημαντική η δωρεάν αποστολή CD, μιας
και ο καθένας μπορεί να φτιάξει ένα δικό του CD, ή ακόμα καλύτερα να φτιάξει
ένα LiveUSB. Έτσι, το ποσό που πήγαινε στο ShipIt για μεονωμένους χρήστες
μπορεί να διατεθεί κάπου αλλού καλύτερα.

Αυτό που εξακολουθεί να υπάρχει είναι το μεγάλο πακέτο που λαμβάνει το
LoCo Team μας,
και για φέτος για το 11.04 κάνουμε τώρα αίτηση στο
https://forms.canonical.com/lococd/
Νομίζω ότι ο Μιχάλης πρέπει να κάνει την αίτηση.

Έτσι, αν έχετε συλλογή CD που χρειάζεται και το 11.04, διοργανώστε κάτι

Την Πέμπτη 18/11 στις 8μμ στη Λεμεσό, πάνω από τη Λαϊκή Τράπεζα της οδού Αθηνών, θα γίνει μια μικρή συνάντηση φοιτητών για το ανοιχτό λογισμικό!

Οι παρουσιάσεις μέχρι στιγμής αφορούν τα εναλλακτικά προγράμματα ανοιχτού κώδικα για ακαδημαϊκές χρήσεις (πχ gimp και inkscape), πώς μπορεί κανείς να βοηθήσει στις μεταφράσεις, τεστ κτλ διανομών linux (συγκεκριμένα ubuntu και fedora) και πώς μπορεί κανείς να εγκαταστήσει το fedora (η αίθουσα έχει υπολογιστές που μπορούμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε για το install fest).

Σας χρειαζόμαστε για να λύσουμε τις απορίες των φοιτητών και να τους δείξουμε ότι το ανοιχτό λογισμικό πράγματι έχει σοβαρή υποστήριξη. Θα ακολουθήσει μπουφές

Ευχαριστoύμε όλους όσους συνέβαλαν στην εκδήλωση "Συνεδριο Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού 2010"

Παιδιά θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε όλους εκείνους που συνέβαλαν στην
οργάνωση, προώθηση και υποστήριξη της εκδήλωσης, αλλά και τους
συμμετέχοντες στην εκδήλωση. Ήταν μια ωραία εκδήλωση. Η αίθουσα
χωρητικότητας 120 ατόμων ήταν μισογεμάτη. Εκτός από τους συνήθεις
υπόπτους είχαμε κάποιους νέους συμμετέχοντες, φοιτητές και καθηγητές της
ακαδημαϊκής κοινότητας του ΤΕΠΑΚ αλλά των φίλων με ενδιαφέρον για το
θέμα. Η εκδήλωση κινηματογραφήθηκε και θα ανεβάσουμε το βίντεο σύντομα.

Ιδιαίτερες ευχαριστίες:

hi guys,

got a question on ubuntu you might know the answer.

I have noticed that on the new versions of ubuntu, when ubuntu boots it does not activate any services until you login.

So nothing starts, no sshd nothing. After you login on the machine, then it starts all services.

so if you remotely restart the machine there is no way to have ssh again until you visit the machine and login to it.
